College Avenue Bridge

The College Avenue Bridge was designed to improve east-to-west pedestrian access by providing an elevated walkway across College Avenue. The bridge is bordered on the east by Hatch and Schurz residence halls and to the north by the site for the new College Avenue Housing complex (opening fall semester 2006). On the west, the bridge adjoins the Virginia Avenue housing complex.

Approximately 1,050 students live in Hatch and Schurz residence halls. Studies conducted in 2002 show that more than 60 percent of pedestrians crossing between the intersections of College and Rollins and College and Hospital Drive did not use the crosswalks.

By 2006, in excess of 2,000 students will live in residence halls located on either side of College Avenue. The Virginia Avenue complex houses 721 students, and College Avenue Housing will house an additional 345 students. These numbers do not include off-campus faculty, staff, and off-campus students who traverse College Avenue regularly.
