College Avenue Bridge
The College Avenue Bridge was designed to improve east-to-west pedestrian access by providing an elevated walkway across College Avenue. The bridge is bordered on the east by Hatch and Schurz residence halls and to the north by College Avenue Hall (2006). On the west, the bridge adjoins the Virginia Avenue housing complex (2004).
Approximately 1,040 students live in Hatch and Schurz residence halls. Studies conducted in 2002 show that more than 60 percent of pedestrians crossing between the intersections of College and Rollins and College and Hospital Drive did not use the crosswalks. At this time, more than 2,000 students live in residence halls located on either side of College Avenue. The Virginia Avenue complex houses 721 students, and College Avenue Hall houses an additional 345 students. These numbers do not include faculty, staff, and off-campus students who traverse College Avenue regularly.
