Schurz/Bingham Project

The Schurz/Bingham project is the second major renovation associated with Phase II of the Residential Life Master Plan. Interior modifications to Schurz Hall will be very similar to those made in Hatch Hall. This project will include renovations to the lower level of Bingham Hall, which will be done in conjunction with Campus Dining Services.

The existing 534 beds will be reduced to 520, and the total beds will be divided into 56 singles and 232 doubles. Thirty-six accessible bedrooms will also be created during this renovation. Construction is scheduled to begin in January of 2007, and the building will reopen for the Fall 2008 semester.

In addition to the creation of single rooms, the Schurz Hall renovation will include central air conditioning, re-development of existing common areas on each floor, a spacious main lounge, new windows, and a three-stop elevator in the Schurz entry designed to serve the upper and lower levels of Bingham.

Lower Level Bingham Renovation:

The construction dates for this project will run concurrently with the Schurz project. Bingham will reopen with Schurz Hall for the Fall 2008 semester.

The Bingham renovation will include the reconfiguration of existing lower level spaces to accommodate Residential Life staff offices, accessible restrooms, quiet study spaces, a meeting room to accommodate groups of up to forty, an expanded seating area for Baja Bingham, and an integrated computing space within the lounge. Our goal is to create a mix of traditional dining/study seating areas and integrate those with soft seating spaces to allow for extended social interaction among residents of Hatch, Schurz, and College Avenue. Replacement finishes (ceiling, flooring, and lighting), exterior masonry repair, and a new roof will also be included in this project.
