Wakonse is a word from the Lakota Indian language meaning “to teach” or “to inspire.” Wakonse residents are people-oriented, service-minded and academically-focused students who are committed to creating a fun and supportive community for residents. This community is open to undergraduate students of all majors.

Community Goals

The Wakonse Learning Community holds values that stem from a philosophy of lifelong learning. Students in this community:

• Actively participate in Wakonse and MU activities
• Experience a sense of community
• Interact with students and faculty in settings outside the classroom in an informal and meaningful way
• Set high academic standards for themselves and place value in the learning process
• Focus their academic and personal lives around Wakonse’s six tenets: academics, balance, challenge, collaboration, community and service

Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs)

The Wakonse Learning Community also houses freshman interest groups (FIGs) that relate to its overall goals and objectives.
