Official Opening Day
Aug. 17
9 a.m.- 9 p.m.
After Aug. 18
During desk hours for each building (approximately 9 a.m. - 11 p.m.)
- What do I need to check in?
-
Students must be present to check in. Please ask your family members to remain in
the vehicle in a designated unloading zone outside while you check in at your hall desk. Be sure to know your Tiger PIN and bring your TigerCard to avoid crowding the desk check-in area. CHECK IN BEFORE YOU START UNLOADING.
- Where do I get my key?
-
You will receive your room key when you check in.
* For rooms with hard keys, be sure to LOCK YOUR DOOR each time you leave your room unattended. It's usually a good idea to keep one family
member in the room and one outside with your stuff until everything is moved in.
* Residents of Center, College Avenue, Defoe-Graham, Dogwood, Galena, Hatch, Hawthorn, Hudson, Gillett, McDavid, North, Schurz and South halls will use their TigerCard as their room key. You must have your TigerCard and know your Tiger PIN (available on myZou in the Check-in Verification section) to activate it for use as a key.
* If you will be living in Tiger Diggs, you will check in and receive your key at the Tiger Diggs office in Building 4, apartment 123 (NOT the Campus View clubhouse!).
- Where can I unload and park my car?
-
You should expect a lot of traffic throughout streets and near buildings during move-in. Some campus streets will be one-way
traffic only to accommodate for unloading zones. Follow the posted signs and directions of MUPD Campus Safety Officers to
reach your assigned building. Once there, you can expect to receive a 20-minute unloading card that you must fill out completely and place in a visible
place on your vehicle dashboard while sitting in a temporary unloading zone. THERE IS NO PARKING ALLOWED IN THE UNLOADING ZONES.
Move-in maps for fall 2011 are now available! View Maps Here.
Remember, many residents will be unloading and moving in at the same time.
- DO NOT pull into a circle drive if it is full of cars. Blocking drives is a traffic violation and you will be asked to move immediately.
- DO NOT pull up into a handicapped space or onto the grass or a sidewalk to unload. Vehicles in fire lanes or handicapped spaces (without permit), on the grass or blocking driving lanes will be ticketed and TOWED.
- It is not possible to accommodate everyone's vehicle in the unloading zone closest to the building (i.e., you won't be able to back up to the front door). Plan to unload your items onto the sidewalk or grass as near the building as possible and move your vehicle immediately after it's unloaded to make room for another vehicle to unload.
- Once your vehicle is unloaded, please move it to a designated parking area within the 20-minute time period, and have a family member stay with your belongings by the curb as you begin to move them into the hall.
- If you unload or park in a metered space, you are responsible for paying the meter. The unloading/parking permit does not exempt you from paying to park in metered spaces.
Garage parking is available on level 4 and above ONLY in Virginia Avenue Garage and the top level ONLY in Conley Avenue Garage for move-in. You may park in designated parking areas for 24 hours after receiving your unloading/parking card for move-in. After this time, you must pick up your assigned parking permit from Parking & Transportation Services (located in Turner Avenue garage) and park in your designated lot or garage. Cars parked in lots or garages after the 24-hour period without the appropriate permit will be TICKETED and TOWED.
If your family is coming in multiple vehicles, the student should check in first while the loaded vehicle finds a space in the unloading zone near the hall. Other vehicles should be parked in designated parking areas, which may be a few blocks away from the residence hall. Check in at the desk BEFORE you unload your entire vehicle onto the lawn/sidewalk to make sure you're in the right place. Be sure to ask a staff member which hall entrance is closest to your room so your family can take the most direct route via stairwell or elevator. Plan to wait for elevators for your heavier loads, and use the stairs as much as possible for lighter loads.
Residential Life appreciates your compliance with the above unloading and parking procedures. Following these rules helps the move-in process go more smoothly for all residents. Residents and parents are expected to follow the instructions of MUPD Campus Safety Officers and Residential Life staff during move-in day.
- Is there an elevator in my hall?
-
All residence halls offer an elevator. Tiger Diggs at Campus View has four levels and does not have elevators.
Remember, the elevators will be crowded, so take as many items as possible up through the stairwells. Plan to take your heaviest items and dolly/luggage cart on the elevator and lighter items on the stairs. PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOAD THE ELEVATORS!
Some halls will have laundry carts or wagons available for student use during move-in. Check with the hall desk for more information when you arrive.
- What is this packet of stuff in my room?
-
As soon as you unlock your room door to move in, you'll notice a packet of materials for each resident. KEEP THIS INFORMATION IN A SAFE PLACE.
The Tiger Guide™ is your official student handbook and contains all rules for living in the residence halls and a comprehensive list of campus resources and contact information. The Tiger Guide™ is also a student planner with monthly and weekly calendar pages that list campus events and activities throughout the year.
The U-Guide is a book full of fun Columbia facts, coupons for local Columbia establishments and generally just a good way to get to know your new home - both Mizzou and the city of Columbia. Keep it around to help you navigate the campus as well as the city once you're ready to branch out beyond your residence hall.
The Fall Welcome booklet is a great source of fun activities designed to introduce you to the campus. Hang onto your booklet through the fall semester because it will keep you in the know about the fun, free activities happening every week!
- How do I take a room inventory?
-
When you check in, you will receive a Room Inventory Condition Check (RICC). The first thing you should do after entering your room is fill out your RICC completely. Be sure to note everything that would be considered "damage" to the room, such as nail holes, scratches on finishes, paint condition, any marks or paint on the ceiling, etc. BE SPECIFIC (i.e., three nail holes in south wall). Hall staff will check your room condition against the information on this form during check-out, so it's in your best interest to fill out the form completely and accurately to avoid damage charges when you move out. To assist you in filling out your RICC, we have provided good and bad sample RICCs. Return the RICC to the hall desk as soon as it is completed!
- How can I decorate my room?
-
Students are required to follow all Residential Life policies during the Residence Hall contract period. To start on a positive note, please adhere to these policies as you personalize and decorate your living space. Click on the links below to view the full policies.
Decorating Policy
Residential Life encourages residents to personalize their living spaces. However, all decorations must follow the guidelines outlined in the official Decorating Policy. These guidelines were created to protect residents from injury and to avoid fees associated with damages from decorating. Before you decorate your space, please read over the full policy and refer to it when you plan to decorate for special occasions like holidays and MU events (games, Homecoming, etc.).
Click here for pictures of decorated rooms, "Less is More."
Painting Policy
Painting is only allowed in Johnston, Jones, Lathrop, Laws, Mark Twain & Wolpers. Residents in these halls may paint their rooms in a standard neutral color with paint and materials supplied free of charge. Only MU-provided paint from the Paint Room in Wolpers Hall may be used. The Paint Room will be open during specified hours. Painting may take place during the first three weeks of the Fall semester.
Approved Adhesives
An important component of the Decorating Policy is the use of approved adhesives for hanging decorations on residence hall room walls or doors. By using approved products, residents can avoid damage fees at the end of the contract period.
Residents in halls with block or plaster walls may only use 3M Command Adhesives to hang items on walls.
Residents in halls with sheetrock constructed walls may only use thumb tacks, push pins or straight pins to hang items on walls.
Only 3M Command Adhesives or blue painter's tape (two week limit) may be used to hang items on doors.
3M Command Adhesive products are available at University Bookstore and other local retailers.
Transparent tape, staples and other fasteners may not be used.
WHY? Gum-type adhesives leave an oily residue; any other type of tape can damage or remove the paint from the wall. If the walls must be repainted, the residents of the room may be charged for the damage.
More information on adhesives and where they can be used is available in the Decorating Policy.
Lofting Policy
Residential Life does not encourage building lofts in MU residence halls. However, if you choose to build a loft, it must follow the guidelines of the Lofting Policy, and it must be built according to the loft design plans approved for your hall. If residents install a loft that does not meet these guidelines or design parameters, they will be required to remove the loft from the residence hall and may face disciplinary action.
Lofts are ONLY allowed in the following halls:
- Jones
- Lathrop
- Laws
- Johnston
- Wolpers
Lofts are STRICTLY PROHIBITED in all other halls.
-
- Can furniture be removed from the room and replaced with my own?
-
Room furniture must remain in your assigned room during the entire contract period. Any missing pieces of furniture at any time will be considered damage to the room, and you will be charged accordingly (see the Tiger Guide™, "Damages" section, for more information). That said, you may bring additional pieces of furniture to your room, such as armchairs or small sofas, as long as they don't obstruct exits (doors and windows) and as long as you've talked with your roommate(s) about it first!
- How do I hook up my computer to Ethernet?
-
Refer to the New to MU section of the Division of IT Web site for instructions on how to hook up your computer to Ethernet.
- Is there storage available in the hall?
-
No, storage is not available in the halls. You must keep your belongings and all student-room furniture in your room. If you brought too much with you, just send the extras home.
