Official Opening Day

During desk hours for each building (approximately 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.)
- What do I need to check in?
-
Students must be present to check in. Please ask your family members to remain in
the vehicle in a designated unloading zone outside while you check in at your hall desk. Be sure to bring your TigerCard to avoid crowding the desk check-in area. CHECK IN BEFORE YOU START UNLOADING.
- Where do I get my key?
-
You will receive your room key when you check-in.* Be sure to LOCK YOUR DOOR each time you leave your room unattended. It's usually a good idea to keep one family
member in the room and one outside with your stuff until everything is moved in.
* Residents of Center, College Avenue, Defoe-Graham, Dogwood, Galena, Hatch, Hawthorn, McDavid, North, Schurz and South halls will use their TigerCard as their room key. You must have your TigerCard (and know the last 4 digits of your social security number) to activate it for use as a key.
* If you will be living in Tiger Diggs or Mizzou Quads, check back soon for specific details about the check-in process.
- Where can I unload and park my car?
-
You should expect a lot of traffic throughout streets and near buildings when you arrive during Move-In. Some campus streets will be one-way
traffic only to accommodate for unloading zones. Follow the posted signs and directions of MUPD Campus Safety Officers to
reach your assigned building. Once there, you can expect to receive a 20-minute unloading card that you must fill out completely and place in a visible
place on your vehicle dashboard while sitting in a temporary unloading zone. THERE IS NO PARKING ALLOWED IN THE UNLOADING ZONES.
View Maps Here
Remember, many residents will be unloading and moving in at the same time.
- DO NOT pull into a circle drive if it is full of cars. Blocking drives is a traffic violation and you will be asked to move immediately.
- DO NOT pull up ito a handicapped space or onto the grass or a sidewalk to unload. Vehicles in fire lanes or handicapped spaces (without permit), on the grass or blocking driving lanes will be ticketed and TOWED.
- It is not possible to accommodate everyone's vehicle in the unloading zone closest to the building (i.e., you won't be able to back up to the front door). Plan to unload your items onto the sidewalk or grass as near the building as possible and move your vehicle immediately after it's unloaded to make room for another vehicle to unload.
- Once your vehicle is unloaded, please move it to a designated parking area within the 20-minute time period, and have a family member stay with your belongings by the curb as you begin to move them into the hall.
- If you unload or park in a metered space, you are responsible for paying the meter. The unloading/parking permit does not exempt you from paying to park in metered spaces.
Garage parking is available on levels 3 and above ONLY in Virginia Avenue Garage and the top level ONLY in Conley Avenue Garage for Move-In. You may park in designated parking areas for 24 hours after receiving your unloading/parking card for Move-In. After this time, you must pick up your assigned parking permit from Parking & Transportation Services (located in Turner Avenue garage) and park in your designated lot or garage. Cars parked in lots or garages after the 24-hour period without the appropriate permit will be TICKETED and TOWED.
If your family is coming in multiple vehicles, the student should check in first while the loaded vehicle finds a space in the unloading zone near the hall. Other vehicles should be parked in designated parking areas, which may be a few blocks away from the residence hall. Check in at the desk BEFORE you unload your entire vehicle onto the lawn/sidewalk to make sure you're in the right place. Be sure to ask a staff member which hall entrance is closest to your room so your family can take the most direct route via stairwell or elevator. Plan to wait for elevators for your heavier loads, and use the stairs as much as possible for lighter loads.
Residential Life appreciates your compliance with the above unloading and parking procedures. Following these rules helps the move-in process go more smoothly for all residents. Residents and parents are expected to follow the instructions of MUPD Campus Safety Officers and Residential Life staff during Move-In Day.
- Is there an elevator in my hall?
-
Most halls offer an elevator. Remember, the elevators will be crowded, so take as many items as possible up through the stairwells. Plan to take your heaviest items and dolly/luggage cart on the elevator and lighter items on the stairs. PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOAD THE ELEVATORS!
The buildings without elevators have four or fewer levels. They include Cramer, Stafford, Tiger Diggs at Campus View and Mizzou Quads at Campus Lodge.
Some halls will have laundry carts available for student use during Move-In. Check with the hall desk for more information when you arrive.
- What is this packet of stuff in my room?
-
As soon as you unlock your room door to move in, you'll notice a packet of materials for each resident. KEEP THIS INFORMATION IN A SAFE PLACE.
The Tiger Guide™ is your official student handbook and contains all rules for living in the residence halls and a comprehensive list of campus resources and contact information. The Tiger Guide™ is also a student planner with monthly and weekly calendar pages that list campus events and activities throughout the year.
The Fall Welcome booklet is a great source of fun activities designed to introduce the campus to you. Hang onto your booklet through the fall semester because it will keep you in the know about the fun, free activities happening every week!
- How do I take a room inventory?
-
When you check in, you will receive a Room Inventory Condition Check (RICC). The first thing you should do after entering your room is fill out your RICC completely. Be sure to note everything that would be considered "damage" to the room, such as nail holes, scratches on finishes, paint condition, any marks or paint on the ceiling, etc. BE SPECIFIC (i.e., 3 nail holes in south wall). Hall staff will check your room condition against the information on this form during check-out, so it's in your best interest to fill out the form completely and accurately to avoid damage charges when you move out. To assist you in filling out your RICC we have provided good and bad sample RICCs. Return the completed RICC to the hall desk as soon as it is completed.
If you will be living in Tiger Diggs at Campus View or Mizzou Quads at Campus Lodge, check back soon for specific details about the check-in process.
- Can I paint my room?
-
Yes, if you live in an unrenovated hall,* you may paint your room after you are checked in. However, you MUST use University-provided paints in one of seven approved colors - are available at your desk and in the Paint Room in Wolpers Hall. To see approved colors, click here.
All standard paint colors and supplies are provided free of charge by the Paint Room. If you choose a darker pigment paint, you must receive approval from your Hall Coordinator, you will pay a fee and you must repaint your room before Reading Day in Spring semester or before checking out of the hall to avoid repainting charges. For more information about painting, see the complete Painting Policy.
*Unrenovated halls include: Cramer, Gillett, Jones, Johnston, Lathrop, Laws, Mark Twain, Stafford and Wolpers.
The Paint Room will be open the following hours during move-in week:
Sunday, Aug. 16: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 17 - Friday, Aug. 21: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
-
PLEASE NOTE: Students who want to paint during Move-In should either park their loaded car in a designated parking area while painting or should unload and place all belongings in their room closets and in the middle of the room before painting. Be sure to follow the directions for painting carefully to avoid damage charges.
- How should I hang posters on the wall?
-
You can only use 3M Command Adhesives or tacks to hang posters on the walls of your room or message boards on your door, depending on the construction type. Drywall requires tacks and pins; block walls require 3M Command Adhesive. Other putty-like substances will leave an oily residue and will result in damage charges. Ceiling decorations of any kind are also not permitted (this includes paint, screws and adhesive stars and moons, etc.).
College Avenue, Center, Discovery, Dogwood, Excellence, Galena, Hawthorn, North, Respect, Responsibility and South halls require tacks/pins (no nails) as they have drywall construction.
In Defoe-Graham, Hatch, Schurz and McDavid, both wall construction types are used. Accepted hanging materials depend on the construction of the wall.
TIP: Buy approved adhesives before traveling to Columbia for Move-In. Columbia stores sell out of these items quickly since everyone buys them.
-
If you live in Mizzou Quads and Tiger Diggs, you may not post anything on the exterior of your apartment, which includes doors, walls, and balconies or porches. Any decorations on the interior walls of the apartment must not cause any damage or you will be charged for the wall's necessary repair or replacement.
- Can furniture be removed from the room and replaced with my own?
-
Room furniture must remain in your assigned room during the entire contract period. Any missing pieces of furniture at any time will be considered damage to the room, and you will be charged accordingly (see the Tiger Guide™, "Damages" section, for more information). That said, you may bring additional pieces of furniture to your room, such as armchairs or small sofas, as long as they don't obstruct exits (doors & windows).
- How do I hook up my computer to Ethernet?
-
Refer to the Are You MU-Ready? section of the Division of IT Web site for instructions on how to hook up your computer to Ethernet.
- Is there storage available in the hall?
-
No, storage is not available in the halls. You must keep your belongings and all student-room furniture in your room. If you brought too much with you, just send the extras home.
