Here are some terms, phrases and acronyms you will likely hear around the residence halls and on campus:
AAS (AREA ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISOR)
The AAS supervises desk staff and maintain occupancy (including room moves) and keys for an area of the halls.
A&S (ARTS & SCIENCE)
A&S is a common shortening for the Arts & Science building, located between Brady Student Center and Speaker's Circle.
AA (ARTS ADVOCATE)
AAs are community leaders in McDavid Hall who help promote fine arts activities within the hall.
ABNR (pronounced Abner)
ABNR is a nickname for the Anheuser-Busch Natural Resources Building, located on Rollins St. across from Hudson and Johnston halls.
AC (AREA COORDINATOR)
ACs are full-time professional staff members who supervise the HCs. Each AC is responsible for a specific area of residence halls and has a Master's degree.
ADAPT (ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION TEAM)
The ADAPT office offers information, programming resources and counseling resources on alcohol and other drugs.
ASUM (ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI)
A student group that lobbies for the University of Missouri, ASUM provides a student voice to the state and federal government.
Brady
If someone asks you to meet them at Brady, you might want to get clarification. Brady Student Center is home to the University Bookstore, several eating options and a dining/studying/gathering area. But there is also Brady Mall, located between the Brady Student Center and Strickland Hall. This strollway is often busy with students when the weather is nice.
CA (COMMUNITY ADVISOR)
CAs are student staff members who live on the residence hall floors. The Department of Residential Life places a high emphasis on the educational role of the CA in building a sense of community on their floor.
CDS (CAMPUS DINING SERVICES)
CDS is the food service operation at the University of Missouri. Each residence hall area of campus has a specific all-you-care-to-eat dining operation, as well as take-out locations. CDS also operates Brady Food Court, Union Square and Mizzou Market convenience stores.
CSI (CENTER FOR STUDENT INVOLVEMENT)
Nope, it's not the TV show. CSI houses many of the offices of clubs and organizations at the university. It is located in A022 Brady Commons.
DA (DESK ATTENDANT)
DAs are student staff members who work the residence hall front desks.
Division of IT (Information Technology)
The Division of IT delivers computing, hardware, software, networking, telecommunications and cable TV services to students, faculty, staff and departments at the University of Missouri campuses and UM System. If you have problems activating your PawPrint, visit their Web site.
DS (DESK SUPERVISOR)
This student staff member supervises the Desk Attendants and mail operations for a residence hall desk. He or she reports to the Area Administrative Supervisor (AAS).
EBE, EBW (ENGINEERING BUILDING EAST, WEST)
If either of these acronyms appear on your schedule, you have a class in either Engineering Building East or Engineering Building West. You can access either of these buildings from 6th St.
FARC (FINE ARTS RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY)
FARC is located in McDavid Hall. This tight-knit community is focused on the fine arts and is home to an art gallery as well as spotlight performances where residents can showcase their talents.
FIG (FRESHMAN INTEREST GROUP)
Many freshmen participate in FIGs, which are designed to mkae the transition to college easier. FIG students are co-enrolled in three classes and live in the same community.
GPC (GRADUATE/PROFESSIONAL COUNCIL)
GPC is the representative body for graduate/professional students at the University of Missouri.
HC (HALL COORDINATOR)
HCs are full-time professionals who oversee the residence halls on campus. Each is responsible for the student staff in their building(s), and each holds or is working toward a Master's degree.
LA (Leadership Advisor)
This position, new for the 2009-10 academic year, is a student position within the residence halls. The LA for a hall provides opportunities for residents to learn about leadership and development leadership skills, providing opportunities to get involved in the community.
Lowry Mall
This strollway goes from Hitt St. (in front of Memorial Union) past Ellis Library to Ninth St., near Jesse Hall. It's not clearly marked as "Lowry Mall"; you just have to know it's there.
Maneater
The Maneater is the University's longest-standing student-run newspaper. Independent of the University, the Maneater publishes every Tuesday and Friday.
Mizzou Quads (Campus Lodge)
Mizzou Quads is an extended-MU community that provides single-room options for students.
MSA (MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION)
MSA is the representative body for undergraduate students at the University of Missouri.
MUPD (UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI POLICE DEPARTMENT)
MUPD is the University police department. Their offices are located in the Virginia Avenue Garage.
PA (PEER ADVISOR)
PAs are student staff members who live in the same community as the FIG they facilitate. The PA teaches a proseminar class that all members of their FIG attend once a week.
QUAD
The Quad refers to the Francis Quadrangle, the area in front of Jesse Hall and home to the famous columns.
R
Often found on schedules, the letter "R" means you have a class on Thursday. If you find it coupled with the letter "T", you have a class on Tuesday and Thursday.
Res Life
Res Life is a common shortening for the Department of Residential Life.
RHA (RESIDENCE HALLS ASSOCIATION)
RHA is the governing board of all hall or group governments on campus. Each hall has a specific number of delegates to RHA; they make decisions and recommendations as representatives of residence hall students.
RICC (ROOM INVENTORY AND CONDITION CHECKLIST)
RICCs are the condition checklists residents complete when they move into their room. The RICC provides residents an opportunity to detail any damages or problems that were already present prior to their move-in.
RLMP (RESIDENTIAL LIFE MASTER PLAN)
The RLMP is Residential Life's 18-year plan to upgrade or replace every residence hall at MU. This five-phase plan is well underway and boasts the construction of eight new halls and extensive renovations of three residence halls. RSD (RECITATION/SEMINAR DISCUSSION)
Found in the schedule of courses and on your schedule, RSD is short for Recitation/Seminar Discussion. Many large lecture classes require students to also enroll in a smaller, "break-out" class, led by a TA or GTA. These RSDs are mandatory and beneficial for getting the most out of the material.
TA/GTA (TEACHING ASSISTANT/GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT)
Teaching Assistants or Graduate Teaching Assistants are pretty much what the name implies. They help the professor. Their duties range from providing another resource for students to ask questions to grading exams to leading an RSD section.
