What type of light bulbs should I use?

We recommend bringing compact fluorescent light bulbs for desk lamps and other personal lighting for your room. These bulbs use 75 percent less energy, generate less heat and last 10 times longer than conventional bulbs. Doing this will help the environment, and Mizzou will save energy, too. Learn more about MU's Energy Management program here.

Are my personal belongings insured?

The University does not purchase property insurance covering any loss of, or damage to, a student's personal property, and the University assumes no responsibility for the payment of such a loss. You should verify that your parents' insurance policy covers full-time students living away from home and plan to purchase renter's insurance if needed.

How long is my bed?

MU twin mattresses measure 80" long by 36" wide. These are four inches longer than standard residential mattresses. They will accommodate large-framed and tall individuals. Standard twin sheets WILL FIT on our mattresses–you do not need to buy specialty or extra-long sheets. The beds at Tiger Diggs and Mizzou Quads are full-size beds.

What size sheets can I use?

Regular twin, jersey, deep-pocket and extra-long sheets will all fit MU mattresses. You do not need to make a special purchase for extra-long sheets. Regular twin sheets will fit MU mattresses. Full-size sheets are necessary at extended campus locations.

Can I build a loft?

We do not encourage lofts in student rooms because all MU residence hall bed furniture is bunkable (bunking pins are available at each hall desk). If you want to build a loft, you must obtain loft procedures and pre-cut all lumber before arriving on campus. Lofts are not permitted in the following halls: Center, College Avenue, Discovery, Excellence, Hatch, Mark Twain, McDavid, North, Respect, Responsibility, Schurz, and South halls. Because all furniture must remain in students' rooms, if you build a loft (which must be free-standing and contain the metal bed frame provided by Residential Life), you will need to store the remaining wooden bed furniture in your room. All lofts must be disassembled before Finals Week at the end of the academic year. For all these reasons, Residential Life does not encourage students to build lofts in their rooms. If residents build lofts that do not meet the department specifications, they will be required to remove them. For more information about lofts, see the Lofting Policy.

What if something is wrong with my room?

If, after you have moved in, you find something needs repair, contact Residential Life through our Work Order Request form located here. If you live in Tiger Diggs or Mizzou Quads, you can contact the individual property management to request a work order.
