Do I need a computer?

You do not need to bring a computer to campus. There are more than 40 computing sites across campus, many in residence halls. The Division of IT has minimum requirements and recommendations for hardware and software if you choose to bring a computer with you. Visit doit.missouri.edu/hardware/ for details. If you bring a laptop, you should bring a lock to secure it. MUPD will also engrave laptops for identification. In addition, a small computer lab is available at each extended MU community.

The University Bookstore also has a helpful program called Let Your Major Be Your Guide, to be used when selecting a computer.

What kind of computer will I need?

The decision to bring a Macintosh or Windows, laptop or desktop computer is of personal preference. You should consider how much space (or lack thereof) you will have in your room and whether or not you want to take advantage of wireless access on campus. If you bring a laptop, bring a lock to secure it. MUPD will also engrave laptops for identification.

Some academic departments require their students to have a laptop or other specific devices. We strongly recommend that you consult your department before making a purchase. Limited information about departmental computer requirements is available through TigerTech; be aware this may not be a complete list.

For general computer information, visit the Division of IT website.

What kind of technology should I bring?

You should bring a touchtone phone if you plan to purchase telephone service through Mizzou. If bringing a cordless phone, make sure it is NOT a 2.4 GHz model, as it can interfere with the campus wireless service. You should also bring a cable-ready TV and cable. Flatscreen TVs are provided in the common living area at Tiger Diggs and Mizzou Quads. Bring power strips with surge protection. Bring your TigerCard, which serves as your room key in some halls (Center, College Avenue, Defoe-Graham, Dogwood, Galena, Hatch, Hawthorn, McDavid, North, Schurz and South).

Will I have telephone, cable and Ethernet access in my room?

Cable and Ethernet (high-speed Internet) services are provided as part of your contract and will be functioning when you move in. If you wish to have telephone service through the Division of IT or through CenturyTel (for those at extended MU), there will be an additional fee. To connect to Mizzou Cable and TigerNet, you will need a CATV cable and an Ethernet cable. Connectivity instructions are available in the Are You MU-Ready? brochure in your room. If you are living at Tiger Diggs or Mizzou Quads, you will not need an Ethernet cable because both residence provide high-speed wireless internet. If you have further questions or would like more information, contact the Division of IT Help Desk at 882-5000 for assistance or stop by one of the ResTech locations in your area.
