Assistant Director of Residential Life for Residential Academic Programs (ADRAP)
The Assistant Director of Residential Life for Residential Academic Programs (ADRAP) is responsible for coordinating department efforts to promote student learning and academic success. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with academic, department, and division colleagues towards the creation and implementation of environments that intentionally foster and enhance the learning, development and academic success of residential students. Additionally, the Assistant Director is responsible for coordination of department assessment activities. The Assistant Director supervises a Graduate Research Assistant for Assessment. The Assistant Director is supervised by the Associate Director of Residential Life for Residential Academic Programs and is a member of the department strategic planning team.
Requirements
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to student learning.
- Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
- Five or more years of experience in academic advising, education, residence hall administration, or a related field.
- Direct experience with the establishment and/or coordination of living/learning communities is highly desired.

Responsibilities
Environments that enhance learning
- Provide resources for professional and student staff to coordinate and promote activities that integrate the living environment with the learning process and thus contribute to academic success and institutional retention and graduation of residents.
- Support efforts to provide seamless learning environments that enhance the achievement of classroom learning objectives for students by partnering with students, academic staff, faculty and hall staff. This includes support for the creation and implementation of opportunities for residents and faculty members to interact outside the traditional classroom setting.
- Provide philosophical foundation and guidance to communities in orientation planning. Coordinate some aspects of community orientations such as the community t-shirts, websites, welcome letters, budgets and centralized copies. Coordinate departmental involvement in campus orientation events.
- Ensure that each community sets goals for learning, community development and involvement. Ensure that each community plans and implements strategies to achieve these goals.
- Ensure that each community designs, implements, and assesses intentional Educational Interactions that enhance the learning and development of residents. Educational Interactions should be based on the Desired Learning Objectives, relevant academic experiences for the community and assessed needs of the community.
- Collaborate with the Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) Coordinator to ensure the integration of individual FIGs into the residential experience and coordination of the FIGs program as a whole with the residential experience.
- Ensure that department staff have opportunities for on going education and professional development about student learning, student development and other issues in higher education.
- Facilitate the process through which the department and academic partners plan for future size and placement of continuing and new learning communities.
- Establish and facilitate a learning community advisory board comprised of key campus partners, that will provide feedback and guidance on the overall development and operation of communities. The purpose of this advisory board is to intentionally foster and enhance the learning, development and academic success of residential students.
Academic and learning-centered services
- Arrange tutoring services in the residence halls in collaboration with the Learning Center. Offer math and writing assistance at several locations. Assist in arranging additional course specific assistance as the need is determined in conjunction with individual communities.
- Collaborate with the Student Success Center to increase awareness and usage of available resources among students and staff.
- Work with University Registrar on arrangements for use of residence hall classrooms/meeting rooms for classes and FIG proseminars.
- Ensure that communities collaborate with academic partners to prepare students to effectively engage with the advising process and offer in-hall advising as appropriate and needed.
- Compile and distribute GPA reports each semester by community and building to Residential Life staff and academic partners.
Collaborative relationships with faculty and academic departments
- Coordinate collaborative efforts with academic staff, faculty and academic departments and units to seek enhanced learning opportunities for students and help create environments that enhance student learning.
- Initiate and develop working relationships with faculty and staff members in academic departments towards the goal of their active involvement in the residential learning communities.
- Facilitate opportunities for academic partners to receive education and development in the general philosophy of integrated living-learning environments as well as the specifics of Mizzou's communities. Coordinate delegations of faculty and academic staff to attend appropriate conferences.
Sponsored learning communities
- In conjunction with the Director of Residential Life identify opportunities to work with academic colleagues to develop new communities with a specific academic focus or theme.
- Assist stakeholders (including faculty, academic staff, Residential Life professional and student staff, and students) of Sponsored Learning Communities with the development and implementation of environments for students in the residence halls that integrate residential experiences with the academic curriculum of the community's focus area.
- Work with Area Coordinators and Hall Coordinators to ensure that effective and community-appropriate processes take place for collaborative goal setting, planning and implementation.
- Work with academic partners and hall staff in the effective implementation of unique staffing roles (e.g. music graduate assistant).
- As appropriate to the community provide guidance and support for processes of application, reapplication and selection of residents.
- Maintain historical documentation of community development, processes and changes.
Assessment
- Provide departmental leadership in developing, implementing and interpreting departmental assessment activities. This includes single time and longitudinal assessment of perceptions, satisfaction, and outcomes of physical environments, learning, and community.
- Educate and support staff throughout the department in the effective development, implementation, analysis and use of assessment.
- Provide appropriate department staff with analysis of collected data to guide and inform practice for current and future operations.
- Identify and share appropriate data from other parts of the institution, other institutions and multi-site studies for benchmarking our data.
- Work with institutional colleagues to coordinate distribution and collection of institutional and national assessment instruments.
- Recommend future areas of inquiry to benefit the department.
Supervision
- Train and supervise the Graduate Research Assistant for Assessment (GRAA). The GRAA's role is to provide logistical support for department assessment projects and processes.
- Coordinate the selection, training and supervision of summer intern(s) for the department. Arrange for their housing, compensation, office and other on-campus logistics.
Promotion and marketing
- In collaboration with the department marketing office ensure that the opportunities for students in the residence halls at the University of Missouri-Columbia are accurately and appealingly promoted and marketed through print, electronic and personal contact. Some of these promotional opportunities include newsletters, brochures, websites, community information letters, residence hall tours, admissions presentations and overnights.
- Work with Area Secretaries and hall staff to ensure the appropriate welcoming environment is presented to residence hall visitors including available printed materials, friendly staff and identified common area and rooms available for viewing. Ensure that visual and verbal messages are accurate and emphasize the department focus on enhancing the undergraduate experience.
- Ensure that colleges and academic units that have student ambassador programs are regularly provided with current information to maintain accuracy in their communication to prospective students and families.
- Create and give presentations to on- and off-campus constituencies that provide information about the operations and accomplishments of the Department of Residential Life. Promote and support similar efforts by other department staff.
- Write articles for publication in professional journals and newsletters that provide information about the operations and accomplishments of the Department of Residential Life. Promote and support similar efforts by other department staff.
- Provide support and guidance to communities that engage in the process of naming their house(s).
Department Leadership Team
- Participate in activities and decision making processes of the department that contribute to the implementation of the mission.
- Represent Residential Life on and collaborate with University committees, departments, and units (including, but not limited to Advisors' Forum, Program for Excellence in Teaching, and Enrollment Management)
- Provide oversight to specified departmental committees (Student Staff Training & Education, Professional Staff Training & Education, Recognition & Support, and ACTION).
- Be a visible member of the department and campus community which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and times when classes are not in session.
- Work with the Associate Director in budget planning and implementation for Residential Academic Programs unit.
