Living Options at Mizzou

In addition to our Thematic and General Learning Communities, the residence halls offer several living options for students including halls that are open over academic breaks, Freshman Interest Groups and specialized living communities. These options each have different restrictions or requirements, so be sure to read up if you're interested in an of the listed options.

Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs)

FIGs are a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and Residential Life. Students participating in this academic program take classes together and live in the same community in order to enhance the immersion in the academic process. The program is composed of 15 to 20 first-year students and a peer advisor, with rooms assigned close together on the same floor or adjacent floors.

Visit our Freshman Interest Group pages for more information on FIGs and how they work.

Gender Neutral Housing

Residential Life is committed to the development of cohesive Living and Learning Communities which emphasize active student involvement, inclusion, service, and appreciation of the diversity of MU. Therefore, to better promote student learning and success, Residential Life offers a gender neutral housing option on the first floor of the Social Justice Learning Community in College Avenue Hall. The gender neutral housing option gives students the option to reside with a person regardless of gender identity or sex. The gender neutral housing option provides a supportive and inclusive living-learning environment.

Students who wish to live in our Gender Neutral Housing must first submit an agreement. Agreeing to the terms of the community will allow students to then pick this community through ROAR.

Open-over-break Housing

Sometimes students need a place to stay over academic breaks. We offer several halls on campus in a variety of styles that remain open over all academic year breaks (August through May). This does not include summer. For a list of open-over-break halls, see the rates tables above.

Recovery-focused Sober Housing

Residential Life understands that maintaining a sober lifestyle may be exceptionally challenging on college campuses and that students seeking support for recovery from alcohol or drug addiction have a greater chance of succeeding in college when those services are available on their campus. For that reason, we have partnered with MU’s Wellness Resource Center to offer a Recovery-focused Sober Housing option within one of our existing residence halls. Collegiate recovery support services, including on-campus housing, provide a bridge between college and recovery that enables students to have successful, enjoyable, and authentic college experiences while also maintaining and thriving in their sobriety.
