Following is a list that we provide to all incoming residents.
If you choose to pack lightly, or are unable to ship everything you will need,
there are many area retailers from which you can purchase anything you choose
not to transport or ship. The City of Columbia offers bus
service to local stores and malls not within walking distance, and there
is also a taxi service available in Columbia.
We recommend no more than one vehicle-load of personal belongings-students who pack more than this often send most of it home.
Items you will need:
- TigerCard (your Mizzou ID - serves as your room key in Hatch, McDavid, North, Center, South and College Avenue halls)
- Social Security card (in case you want to get a job)
- Bedspread or comforter, blankets
- Twin-size sheets*
- Pillows & pillowcases
- Towels and washcloths
- Season-appropriate clothing (switch out during breaks)
- Clothes hangers
- Alarm clock or clock-radio with battery
- Surge strips or surge protectors. Choose units with a 15 amp circuit-breaker and safety reset switch.
- Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.)
- Prescribed medications & prescriptions for renewal at a local pharmacy
- Backpack
- School supplies (pens, notebooks, paper)
- Umbrella, rain gear
* Standard, jersey, extra long and deep- pocket sheets will all work on our mattresses– you DO NOT need to purchase specialty sheets for our beds.
Self-Care items:
- First aid kit (including bandages, alcohol, etc.)
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (Advil™, Naprosyn™, Motrin™, ibuprofen)
- Fever reducer (Tylenol™, acetaminophen)
- Decongestant
- Cough suppressant (with dextromet horphan)
- Thermometer
- Adhesive bandages (Band-Aids™)
- Topical antibiotic cream (Neosporin™, Bacitracin™)
- Current insurance card or two-sided copy from parents’ plan covering student
Items that may be useful:
- Shower bucket
- Shower shoes/flip-flops
- Bathrobe, hair dryer
- Cleaning supplies
- Broom, small vacuum
- Laundry basket, iron, quarters
- Floor protection pad if bringing your own chair with casters
- Telephone
- Personal computer, printer, flash-style drive
- Detergent and fabric softener
- Under-bed storage drawers or caddies
- Dishware, dish soap
- Message board for door (these are provided for residents of Center, College Avenue, Discovery, Excellence, Hatch, McDavid, North, Respect, Responsibility and South halls)
- Desk supplies (stapler, folders, etc.)
- Dictionary, thesaurus
- Bicycle and U-lock
- Fan
- Small sewing and tool kits
- Extra wastebasket and trash bags
- Checkbook, debit card
- Extension cords
- Stereo
- Flashlight and batteries
- Cellular phone
- Pictures, posters and other decorative items
(only use approved adhesives such as 3M Command adhesives and 3M Command adhesive hangers.)
- Cooking appliances approved for use: toasters (not toaster ovens), coffee makers, crockpots, rice steamers and air-popcorn poppers. All appliances must be UL-approved.
- Desk/floor lamps (Note: Halogen lamps can be a fire hazard. If you choose to have one, it must use a maximum 300-watt bulb and have an attached glass or wire "safety basket." Multi-headed lamps similar to the one on page 16 of your Movin' to Mizzou guide are not permitted–leave them at home to avoid confiscation.)

Items you should discuss with your roommate before purchasing:
- Mini-refrigerator* (4.5 cubic feet or less)
- Microwave* (1000 watts or less)
- Carpet or rugs, curtains
- Television, VCR/DVD player
- Video game console
Note: No more than one permitted per room (in four person singles, each resident may have a fridge, but it is not necessary as there is common space in suites)
What you should NOT bring:
- Unapproved materials for hanging including Scotch™, duct, electrical or masking tape; gum-type adhesives; tacks, nails and staples; anything else that may damage walls.
- Whiteboards (in newer halls as bulletin boards are provided)
- Lofts-Because our beds are bunkable, we do not encourage lofts. If you build one, it must be according to the regulations available from Residential Life. See the "Loft Policy" on the website for full details.
SUBJECT TO CONFISCATION/REPRIMAND:
- Candles/incense (even if you do not intend to burn them)
- Pets (having a pet requires approval)
- Alcohol/decorated alcoholic containers
- Illegal drugs
- Weapons
- Space heaters of any kind
- ANY cooking appliances not listed as approved above. These include, but are not limited to: toaster ovens, hot plates, George Foreman™ grills and any non-UL-listed appliances.
